Coral Springs FL/September 16, 2008 – Howard Melamed, President and CEO of CellAntenna Corporation will address the Third Annual Gulf Coast Terrorism Prevention Conference at 9:15 AM on September 18, 2008 at the Hyatt Hotel, 1000 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota, Florida. Melamed will speak on understanding the threat of cell phones used in remote triggering of improvised exploding devices (IED’s). The conference is being hosted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
“In today’s world, the IED triggered by a cell phone is the terrorist’s weapon of choice,” said Melamed. “We have seen it used in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Israel, and Iraq to create havoc and devastation. Fortunately there are ways to disrupt and thwart the terrorists with jamming devices.”
“Unfortunately, this simple tool that could save lives is unavailable to local and state law enforcement because of an outdated law from the 1930’s,” continued Melamed. “That is why CellAntenna has been leading the fight to change the law to allow first responders, local, and state law enforcement the tools they need to carry out their duties and protect our citizens from IED’s. My presentation will address the deadly impact of IED’s and how they can be prevented. I want to thank the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office for taking the lead.”
In 2005, CellAntenna Corporation mounted a judicial challenge to the constitutionality of the Communications Act of 1934, seeking to permit the use of cellular jamming devices by state and local governments and first responders. After the United States District Court, Southern District of Florida in service provider is a member, opposes CellAntenna’s position.Miami ruled that it lacked jurisdiction, CellAntenna filed a Petition for Rulemaking before the FCC to allow state and local governments to use jamming equipment. The CTIA, of which every cellular service provider is a member, opposes
CellAntenna’s position.
